NCDXF announces grant to VP6T Pitcairn Island DXpedition

The Northern California DX Foundation is pleased to announce a contribution of 6,000 USDs to the VP6T Pitcairn Island DXpedition.

The operation is taking place between January 20th and February 4th, 2012. Pitcairn Island is No. 41 on the DX Magazine’s Most Wanted List for 2011.

Five veteran DXpeditioners anticipate more than 30,000 QSOs and plan
to have three stations on the air around the clock on nine bands.
A special effort will be made to work Europe and the U.S. East Coast.

The group and the HK0NA DXpedition have coordinated operating frequencies to avoid mutual interference.

For the past 40 years the NCDXF has funded major DXpeditions to many
Most Wanted countries. The credit for these large grants goes to the
NCDXF contributors who make DX like this possible.

Amateur Radio Kids Day: Sunday 8 January

On the IARU Region 1 site Lisa PA2LS writes about the Amateur Radio Kids’ Day event that takes place this Sunday.

Kids Day is an on-air event to encourage young people (licensed or not) to have fun with Amateur Radio.

The Kids Day operating event is not a contest. It’s a way to tell young people worldwide about the magic and mystery of two-way hobby radio communications.

To do this, Amateur radio stations are being asked to devote this short time window to promote the terrestrial hobby and ham radio satellite operations to youngsters. This, by providing a place to make contacts with other Kids Day stations around the world.

It is designed to give on-the-air experience to youngsters and hopefully foster interest in getting a license of their own. It is also intended to give older hams a chance to share their station and love for Amateur Radio with their children

43 years of 73 Magazine on web

PDF’s of all issues of the popular Amateur Radio publication 73 Magazine produced by Wayne Green W2NSD from 1960-2003 are available for download.

Wayne was always into the latest ground breaking Amateur Radio technology and his magazine reflected that with articles on RTTY, ATV,SSTV, FM Repeaters and Amateur radio satellites.

A popular part of the magazine was Wayne Green W2NSD’s ‘Never Say Die’ column. In it he gave his views on just about everything. Among Wayne’s favorite topics over the years were:

- The failure of the ARRL to prepare for the 1971 World Adminstrative Radio Conference which resulted the loss of hundred of MHz of amateur satellite frequencies

- The disaster of incentive licensing

- The FCC restrictions on repeaters

- The Internal Revenue Service (IRS)

EU will Amateurfunk weiter einschränken

Das IARU-R1 Vorstandsmitglied Thilo Kootz, DL9KCE berichtet, dass das "New Legislative Framework" NLF, eine Kommission des Europäischen Parlamentes, derzeit verschiedene Direktiven, welche auch den Amateurfunk stark beeinflussen, überarbeitet. Gemäss den ersten Entwürfen sollen dabei verschiedene Passagen der derzeit geltenden Vorschriften so abgeändert werden, dass dadurch der Amateurfunk massiv eingeschränkt werden wird.

Konkret handelt es sich um folgende zwei einschneidenden Änderungen:

1. Der Satz "Bausätze für Amateurfunkgeräte und industriell gefertigte Geräte welche für den Gebrauch durch Funkamateure umgebaut wurden, sind nicht mit kommerziell vertriebenen Geräten gleichgestellt" soll in der neuen Vorschrift gestrichen werden. Damit würden Bausätze und modifizierte Geräte vollumfänglich der EMC-Direktive unterstellt. Ein Selbstbau wäre damit wohl endgültig nicht mehr möglich.

2. Die Definition des Ausdruckes "Elektromagnetische Störung" soll neu auch das empfangene Radiosignal als mögliche Ursache bezeichnen. Dies wiederspricht sowohl dem Radio-Reglement der International Telecommunication Union ITU wie auch dem Vokabular des International Electrotechnical Commitee IEC.

Die IARU Region 1 hat auf ihrer Homepage angekündigt, dass sie auf diese Änderungsvorschläge in den nächsten Wochen mit einem Brief reagieren will. Auch der Vorstand der USKA hat von dieser Entwicklung Kenntnis genommen und wird bei den entsprechenden Stellen seinen Einfluss geltend machen.

Jean-Pierre Guillou F9RM, Silent Key

It is with deep sadness that I report the passing of Jean-Pierre Guillou, F9RM, after a three month illness. An active DXer since 1948, he had 336/380 (current/total) confirmed in the ARRL DXCC Mixed standings. He was devoted to IOTA, maintaining top position in the Honour Roll continuously for almost 30 years from December 1979 onwards. This is a record which may never be beaten. In the last months he was active only in IOTA, making his final QSO, a new one with CE4A, a day before he died. The IOTA Programme has lost one of its strongest supporters. R.I.P. Jean-Pierre.
